Cyclone gabrielle gas safety

Our thoughts are with our Hawke’s Bay customers impacted by Cyclone Gabrielle. If you're able to return home please make sure to check your gas appliances before using.

If gas appliances (like hot water, cook top, ovens or gas heaters) are not working, or if you suspect that an appliance/s have been damaged by flooding please make sure to turn your gas valve off at your meter.

The gas valve can be found next to the gas meter outside the building. A spanner may be required to turn the gas off, depending on the valve type:

Different types of gas valves and how to turn them off.

How to turn off your gas valve

After turning off your gas valve, contact a gas fitter to inspect your appliances for safety before turning them back on.

Our crews have inspected the gas network as soon as we were able to access the region and we’re pleased to say that Powerco’s gas infrastructure is intact (Powerco is the parent company of The Gas Hub). The gas network is still running in Hawkes’ Bay and is safe to use, there have been no leakage events.

We continue to monitor the situation closely.

In the event you smell gas go outside, or upwind of the source of the smell, refrain from using any ignition sources (like cigarettes, e-cigarettes or lighters) and phone our parent company Powerco on 0800 111 848 for assistance.

More information on gas safety can be found on the Powerco website
